High performance Gas Turbines

Cape Aerospace Technologies designs, manufactures and tests high performance gas turbines for the propulsion of model aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV’s), high speed target drones and glider sustainers. CAT also assists with Research and Development projects within Educational Institutions.

The CAT series of KS (Kero Start) turbines are entirely unique in concept. The first and only production microturbine with electric autostart which does not utilise Propane and/or Butane for starting was placed in the market in 2005, namely the BMT 120 KS. The convenience and simplicity of the system is surpassed only by the degree to which safety for the operator and airframe has been improved. As an additional benefit startup temperatures are considerably lower overall than for old technoloy gas-start. Dont be fooled into thinking this system is any more complex, users of the KS engines can all testify to the ease and simplicity it brought to their jet experience. Turbine technology and advancements on the engines and subsystems have grown eversince.

Here at CAT we have commited our resources to producing a regular supply of engines to meet the demand from the growing group of jet pilots. The many inquiries from die-hard supporters of other brands for a more reliable and consistent product has confirmed our policy of quality over quantity. In order to be fair to all we will maintain a first come first served approach on production engines.

CAT executes most of its CNC manufacturing in-house to maintain the highest level of quality control. All turbines are balanced in-house by means of a Schenck balancing machine before engine assembly. Every turbine is patiently assembled by a skilled engineer and thoroughly tested before delivery to the client to ensure the designed performance parameters are achieved.

CAT 120 KS

The CAT 120 KS delivers a thrust of 125 N at 120 krpm with a fuel consumption of ***. The engine incorporates a Kero Start system and is known for its reliability and ease of use.

The CAT120-KS is a Single Fuel Autostart Micro Turbine. It employs a centrifugal compressor with a single stage turbine. The combustion chamber utilizes an innovative fuel vaporizer system for efficient combustion. The main shaft is lubricated and cooled using a part of the fuel supply as lubricant. The lubricating capability of the fuel is enhanced by the addition of 5% Turbine Oil.

CAT 200 KS

The CAT 200 KS delivers a thrust of 240 N at 120 krpm with a fuel consumption of ***. No other turbine of this class on the market has any similar product offering with the as-said fuel consumption rating. The CAT 200 KS is designed with a new compressor stage configuration that enables a Total-to-Total pressure ratio of 5:1 over the compressor stage.

The turbine underwent a number of changes that also reduce the Turbine Inlet Temperatures (TIT’s) to 1200 K (927 C), with EGT’s in the range of 1000K (727 C)

Electronic Control Unit (ECU)

The ECU uses an advanced microprocessor and acts as the throttle of the engine. It uses a five cell NiCad battery back of 1100mAH. The ECU does not utilize RX battery power as it is optically isolated. It can regulate a constant 5V for its internal working from pump battery voltages between 3 and 9 Volt and is therefore immune from battery condition.

Operation:
All aspects of turbine operation is controlled via the ECU based on normal parameters “mapped” during programming. Deviations from these are corrected and should operational parameters not return to normal within specified time span, power is reduced to a level where emergency parameters are allowed to continue operation of the turbine if possible, otherwise the main fuel valve is shut. At the same time the retract gear is lowered to indicate a situation requiring the pilot to immediately land the aircraft. The pilot has however the discretion to retract the gear again by cycling the retract switch after which point the ECU will not interfere with the gear channel again. The pilot has the option to shut down the engine at any time by closing throttle and idle trim lever.

Ground Support Unit (GSU)

The GSU has the function of controlling the startup procedure as well as the setting-up of parameters like throttle input calibration and RPM limits. RPM has an absolute limit beyond which it cannot be adjusted but may be reduced to limit power output to a safe level beyond which airframe loads may otherwise have been exceeded. The GSU is housed in a compact instrument type case incorporating all hardware required and comes complete with single umbilical twist-on quick Electro/pneumatic connector for simple interfacing to airframe.
